Sailing Tips

  • Thou shalt not sail where birds are standing." If you see birds standing on what looks like water, they are usually on a "shoal" or shallow area. Lake Natoma is surrounded by cobble and rock. These elements are not good on fiberglass boat bottoms.
  • Learn and know the shallows and shoal areas. PLEASE STAY CLEAR.
  • Personal Floatation Devices (Personal Floatation Device (PFD)s) must be WORN at all times.
  • Do not attempt to beach or land your boat anywhere except the Sac State Aquatic Center docks.
  • Due to heightened security, the Federal Bureau is extremely sensitive to the Nimbus Dam facility. Please stay clear of Nimbus Dam.
  • Lake Natoma weather conditions can be shifty. Sailors should be aware of the weather and surroundings at all times. Never sail in conditions beyond your ability.
  • All sailors must know the proper use, care, and storage of Sac State Aquatic Center equipment.
  • Sac State Aquatic Center will not permit boat launching from our facility in extremely high wind, high current flow, or electrical storm conditions.
  • Sailboats need to abide by right of way rules. Lake Natoma is a multi-use lake so please be respectful of all users (swimmers, rowers, paddlers, etc.).
  • Remember: water, sun block and a paddle can be your best friend.
  • For safety purposes, 2 people are required to rent the Holder 14, Catamaran, and the Holder 20. (Keelboats)
